Upgrades will give you a boosts in certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of the item by +3. A random extra substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are not as valuable for the latter because of the requirement to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item upgrading is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be used to create Enchantments.

You can upgrade your equipment anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended to visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks to ensure that your equipment is up to date.

The cost of upgrading will be based on the current level of the equipment being upgraded, but will always be cheaper than purchasing new gear from other sources. For example, upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points, while buying a similar item from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade tools, armor, weapon, and accessory upgrades. They can be bought by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any weapon, tool or armor. button, which will display an item's preview at the next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the Item Level upgrade slot and the current level of the item, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for example. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Certain upgrades provide discounts on Flightstones. Once an item upgrading is upgraded to a certain level, it can be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of the two currencies.

Many locations offer item upgraders which include the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount and the chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrades increases according to the number of items being upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades must be acquired through various methods which is both an improvement as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3, a number of new features were added to the upgrade system. Once a player obtains an upgrade to a certain level of an item upgrader kit for a specific armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less, even when they are part of an entirely different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones required for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is account-wide. The amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is cut as well, but is only available once certain milestones are achieved.

Crests

Players have several choices when it comes to upgrading their gear in WoW. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more special and are utilized during specific item level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system, which was introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests are only able to be spent on equipment that is of a particular rank, and that each rank has different requirements for upgrading. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, based on the kind of equipment being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through working through content that is of the appropriate level, whether that means walking around and doing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons with all difficulties for higher-tier items or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses or dungeons for endgame gear. These crests can be exchanged with an item upgrader like Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and pathways.

The use of these currencies isn't that difficult, but the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. When a piece attains the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it will no longer require Flightstones. This change allows players to upgrade their gear to the highest level possible on all of their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

Another significant change is that crests only have one purpose and it's crucial to use them properly. For instance, it's a good idea to make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests with the Best item upgrade gear you have available and save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you plan to make. This is especially applicable to rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character, which can only be eligible to avail the account-wide discount if all of the slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
