Types of UPVC Door Handles

Lever/Lever

A lever is a rigid rod that pivots around an object. When you apply a force to the end of the lever, it will tend to rotate the fulcrum in the direction of the applied force. This motion increases the applied force which allows you to lift or move something that would require a greater amount of force if you were to apply directly to the load.

The distance between the fulcrum of the lever and the point where you apply force determines the most effective movement. This is referred to as the mechanical advantage. The advantage in mechanical terms increases as the lever is extended. You can calculate the advantage by dividing the distance from the fulcrum to the point at which you are applying the force by the distance between the fulcrum and the end of the lever.

Levers can also have a variety of effects depending on how the forces are applied. For example a lever of class 2 is inclined to turn in the opposite direction when the force of effort is applied (like a totter-totter). The forces generated by pushing on the handle of a front door can produce rotational effects that are similar to these.

However, levers don't create energy. They simply multiply the force you apply by converting a small amount of effort over a large distance into a greater amount of force applied over a shorter distance. Levers are used to lift heavy objects and move large quantities of cargo. This is also the principle behind the levers you find in a variety of everyday tools such as crowbars, fishing rods claws for hammers and even your legs when you sit on the hand brake of your vehicle.

Lever/Pad

Lever pad handles, also referred to as upvc door handles, feature levers on both sides to operate the multipoint locks. These come in many variations & finishes and are suitable for a variety of materials like UPVC, old aluminium window handles & Timber doors. They are sold as a pair for the inner and outer door, with screws and spindles included. They are available both hand- and non-handled versions to suit different users.

They are commonly used in new constructions and can be used to replace the existing doors made of upvc. They are typically operated by lifting the levers to throw all of the multipoint locks and turning the key to close and unlock. They provide a bit more security than standard lever door handles because locking can only be performed through the inside with keys.

They are not as safe as a cylinder lock, but they are a cost-effective way to add extra security to your home. The only drawback is that they don't have the same level of security as a cylinder bolt and consequently don't block access to outside when the door is left open.

Typically, these will be designed to be compatible with a 92mm lock or the replacement version of this known as a Paddock lock. They will have a 92mm centre cylinder on the inside and 62mm on the outside. They will also be fitted with 2 spindle followers. Some are inserted into the back plate, while others can be removed to allow for different fixing centers.

Lever/Snib

Lever latches, the simplest of all door handles, are commonly used. The lever is pushed downwards to operate a simple latch inside the door that can be locked using a key. Some lever privacy handles operate in the same way, but with the addition of the snib (like the doorknob).

A snib-button can be very beneficial, especially for homes where it's crucial to maintain privacy or security. You can use the snib button to block your guest from entering until they are prepared. This kind handle can also be put in for doors in the interior, like those in bedrooms where you want to restrict access from outside.

In certain situations there are instances where snib buttons could cause problems, particularly if you have doors and locks that are distorted. If the snib is applied in error, or by a person who isn't accustomed to it, the door could close and shut you out. In most cases, you can get in by knocking on the door frame or letterbox, but this isn't a good idea.

Lever/Moveable Pad

This is a popular handle style for front doors. It comes with the advantage of stopping the door from opening from outside without keys if the lock is not deadlocked. This is achieved by a 'pad' shaped external handle that locks into the gap between the handles and lock case to stop the latch from being removed or the door opened.

This handle is designed to be used with uPVC multipoint locks which use a split spindle mechanism. This type of operation requires the internal lever handle as well as the external door handles pad handle to be mounted on the same lock case. This could be a straightforward replacement of the current uPVC handle, however it could also require a new lock case or a brand new set to handle furniture.

These aluminum lever/movable pads door handles are suitable to be used on uPVC and feature an easy-to-maintain slide bearing. They also come with fixing lugs, spring cassettes and an unstick slide bearing. These handles have a euro-profile cut out, and can be fitted to many uPVC or doors made of timber.

Lever/Moveable Snib

The lever handle is one of the most well-known types of upvc door handles and comes in a variety of styles. It consists of two inline handles that move and is lockable with either a key or thumbturn cylinder on the inside. Pad handles can be used as an alternative to lever/lever handles. It is comprised of an adjustable or fixed pad that can be used to operate locks. These Fullex handles come with a spring-loaded lever pad as well as a snib, which can be activated to hold the latch.
