Driving License Category A2

The A2 category of driving license permits you to operate motorcycles without sidecars, with a maximum engine output of 35 kW. The power/weight ratio of the motorcycle cannot exceed 0.2 kW/kg.

This driving license was created to let you get your small motorcycle driving licence early, and then move on to the A2 licence with more engine power.

Motorcycles and scooters

The second stage of motorcycle license is the driving license category A2. It allows you to drive small motorcycles (up to 50cc) and mopeds with a maximum cubic capacity of 125cc. This class lets you gradually increase the engine power of your vehicle, and also to fantasize about larger engines. The test is a little more difficult than that of the first category, and you need to attend more theory lessons to prepare for it.

The category A2 driver's licence is valid up to the age of 24. It may be used alongside a car driving licence category A1 or as part of a provisional category B driver's license. If you're older than 24 years, however, you must have a category B driving license is required to drive motorcycles that exceed 35 kW.

You can get your group A1 licence at the age of 16 (in Denmark, Malta, and Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and in Germany, Hungary, Iceland and in the following countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Italy and Poland). Once you reach the age of 16 you must pass the A2 category motorbike test. You must pass the test prior to turning 18. After two years, you are able to move to category A.

After passing the test in category A2, you can drive a motorcycle with or without sidecar and vehicles on three wheels with a power range of up to 35 kW. These vehicles must have a power/weight of no greater than 0.02 kW/kg, and cannot be derived directly from a vehicle with twice the maximum power.

If you have passed a two-part moped or motorcycle test of lower category from the 1st of July 1996, then you are able to skip the theory test and take the practical exam. You can ride a small moped or scooter equipped with L plates, or get the new AM licence, which allows you to ride up to 50cc bikes with a top speed of 45mph. The AM licence will only be valid if you have taken your test for theory and completed nine hours of training divided into practical and theory lessons at driving schools.

Motor vehicles with 4 wheels

This category covers all motor vehicles with four wheels that are not passenger cars or buses. This category also includes utility vehicles such as pickups vans, panels, and pickups. Motorhomes, campers and lorries are also included. This category also includes vehicles such ambulances, hearses and carryalls that are made to transport eight or more passengers or have a mass maximum of 750kg or greater. A1 drivers can drive vehicles of this kind with a trailer that weighs up to 775kg.

After passing the theory test, you will then be required to take a practical driving examination on both private and public roads. After passing both tests, you will receive an application for a driving license. This request must be presented to the local authority within three years after passing your practical test.

Once you have passed your driving test, you are able to begin driving vehicles of the category A2. In certain countries, if held an A1 licence for two years, you will not need to pass another driving test to obtain a category A2 license that permits you to drive motorcycles that have up to 35 kW. This lets you get familiar with less powerful two-wheelers before upgrading to more powerful machines.

If you have a category A2 driving license, you can also drive tricycles if it has the capacity of cylinders up to 125cc, and a power output of no more than 11kW. This category was earlier part of the A licence. All drivers who obtained an A category licence prior to 19th January 2013 were entitled to use mopeds, and they were able to keep the right.

Motor vehicles with five or more wheels

This category includes power-driven vehicles that are designed for use on a road and for transport of goods or people. They must have at least 2 or 3 wheels that are in contact with ground as well as a driver's chair or saddle and a motor able to reach speeds of 20 miles per hour or more. These vehicles come with brakes and a steering wheel. They are also able to steer in a normal direction, and can be driven in reverse. In some cases, these vehicles have a hood or other covering that can be opened. This term was traditionally used for trucks (vans minivans, minivans, pickups as well as sport utility vehicles) and buses that can carry 16 or greater passengers. A slightly different definition is used by the federal government, which sets uniform licensing requirements for drivers of commercial vehicles. This definition excludes vehicles with a weight of 26,001 pounds gross weight or more.

Additionally to that, the category A2 driving license can be used to operate a moped, motor-driven bicycle, or motorcycle. This type of license is only valid for motors with a maximum cylinder volume of 125 cubic centimeters, or a maximum power of 15 kilowatts. This license can also be used for driving a motor tricycle. Some people choose to obtain an operator license which is valid for vehicles with a an authorized maximum weight of 3,500kg, and up to eight seats. Drivers who have an operator license are allowed to tow trailers that weigh up to 750kg MAM. They are also permitted to transport a trailer as heavy as 3,500kg using a tractor, or construction equipment.

Motor vehicles that have trailers

Category A2 includes motor vehicles with trailers. These are not pulled by drivers, but are towed by larger vehicles, such as cars. The maximum authorized mass (MAM) in this category is 8,250kg.

You must pass the theory test of category A1 or have a direct entry driving licence to drive vehicles in this class. You may also be required to pass a driving test, based on the type of vehicle you plan to drive.

The license you are granted for Category A2 is valid for a period of three years, starting on the day you pass your theory test. To keep it valid, you must renew it prior to the expiration date.

You can also apply for an driving license for other vehicles that have specific requirements. You require a specific license to drive a large vehicle (category C), which requires you to know the regulations for the transportation of hazardous items.

The code 96 is added to your category B of your driving licence after you have passed both the theory and practical test, but your vehicle or trailer are not eligible for a category C licence. Code 96 is added to your licence for category B driving licences when you have passed your theory exam and the practical test, but your vehicle and trailer do not qualify for a category C licence under the norms.

You must hold a driving license for category kat b at least for two years, and you must pass both a theory and a practical test. To be qualified, you must have also completed a specific training course and have received additional training. This is referred to as a driver training course.
