Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums and was a more ferocious, constant effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. Its edgier sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate and less cloned previously recorded efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live performance which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after and then embarked on a world tour to support it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released as a double album titled Then And Now in 2001. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
