Item upgrading allows players to increase the gear score of an item up to 700, and then add an additional perk. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory, and then taking them to the kiln.

Certain items can be upp'd to increase their stats (like a perfectly made breakpoint armour that can be rolled to use in melee PvP) while other items, such as weapons do not vary greatly post upgrade and thus aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

Upgrades to weapons can improve their numerical stats, like attack damage, crit chance, and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons have a flat-rate bonus that increases damage per second. Additionally some weapons come with an added bonus that is activated when three or more of the same weapon are present on a single unit. This bonus may be more than the damage that an upgrade alone can do.

The cost of upgrading a weapon is contingent on its rarity and current level. For example, an +2 weapon requires two standard Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade the gun will increase until it requires more Smithing Stones. At that point, it will reset back to one.

Upgrades to weapons will also reroll the stats of their base. While this is generally beneficial but it can also have negative consequences too. Upgrades can render items inaccessible, unless you're extremely lucky.

Upgrades can be made to armor items to boost their effectiveness. This will increase the base defense of a helm or chest, while belts and gloves will increase their required strength and agility. Armor also offers an option to reroll its Enhanced Defense percentage, which means that it can sometimes roll back to a lower number.

The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats that it will gain upon upgrading, along with the relative value of those stats. This means that the weapon will gain an attack damage of 3% if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. The 3% difference does not mean that the weapon will strike three times less, since it is an absolute number.

Rerolling a weapon is possible by pressing the green button on the item menu using the arrows that are circling. This will reroll the item and alter its stats but it won't reset the weapon's level nor bind to account status.

Armor

Making a few improvements to your armor can make a huge difference in your ability to survive. Certain sets can provide MASSIVE improvements in the resistance to curses, poisons, fire, and magic. This makes it easier to navigate difficult areas. In general, the more defense you have on your character, the greater health you will gain from each point. Therefore, it's a good idea to upgrade your armor.

To improve your armor, head to any of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. There are four fountains in all each of which requires you to complete a unique side-quest involving the Stable Trotters musical troupe. After you've completed your main quest and the associated fountains, you'll be able to talk to any Great Fairy in order to unlock the menu for upgrading armor.

Each piece of armor can be upgraded up to three levels and the amount of materials and Rupees required for each will vary. You'll need anywhere from three Red Chuchu jellies and 10 Rupees to upgrade the first armor piece, and anywhere between five Rubies or ten Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns to upgrade each subsequent one. For example, the Champion Leathers can be upgraded to +5 defense, which allows you to keep up with a good-sized group of enemies in most cold conditions, and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded up to +20 defense, granting the protection needed to survive a full on raid with a few friends.

It's important to note that armor cannot be upgraded in the same manner as weapons, so you'll want to work on enhancing it to increase physical power if you're a Warrior or Spell Power when you're a Mage. It is recommended to save your armor upgrades to upgrade the armor you will still be wearing at the end of the story, such as the Ring of Lightning, Spectral Shield or the mask you'll wear in the final boss fight The Monter Parts Merchant Mask.

You can also gain benefits to your armor by presenting the jeweler in Gerudo Town 10 Twinkling Titanite. Generally speaking, you'll want to save these upgrades for the weapon you'll use to win the game, such as the Longsword, Battleaxe or Warhammer however, it could be useful to have some improvements to the chest armor and helmets to allow you to stealth around some monsters.

Potions

Potions are liquids that when consumed by the player, give the player with a temporary effect. There are five different types of potions, each having particular effects and durations. Some potions can be upgraded, increasing the effectiveness of their effects. You can also enhance the effects of certain potions by adding glowstone dust and redstone.

Potion upgrades require a certain amount XP. This can be earned by making them on a craft table, or by storing them in the Alchemist chest. The price of upgrades changes depending on what type of potion you'd like to upgrade, as well as on the item level upgrade's Mark Level and rarity.

Trinkets can be upgraded by players as well as weapons and armor, as well as potions. Upgrades can be purchased by paying the appropriate currency to an upgrade vendor. Trinkets like other items that can be upgraded, can be traded at will without losing stats.

The upgrade vendors can be found in major cities and in the capital of each zone, as well as in some instances in dungeons. Upgrades for trinkets can be purchased using tokens, gold or fragments of rare trinkets.
