Door handles appear to be a small detail however, if you don't like the way they look or are finding them difficult to use then it's time to replace them. Installing the new handle on your door is easy if you have patience.

Modern door handles are usually equipped with cover plates that hide the screws for a more attractive appearance. However, you will need to attach them separately if your new handle does not have them attached already.

Take off the handle from the old one.

Door window locking handles are not only essential for aesthetics of your home, but they're also essential for security as they let you lock and unlock your door. However, over time, your door handle may lose its grip, appear loose or start to look old and worn out. This is a sign that it's time to replace your door handle.

One of the first signs that your door handle is in need of replacing is the fact that it is becoming difficult to operate. This is a serious issue as you will no longer be able to lock or unlock the door, which could put you and your family at risk.

It's also recommended to replace your door handle in the event that it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be dangerous, especially for elderly and children members who may struggle to open it. They could be trapped. It's easy to fix a damaged handle on the door.

The majority of modern door handles are standard size, so they are suitable for any door. If you're unsure if the new door handle you're buying will work, try removing the old one and measuring its housing holes. This will allow you to buy the right size door handle.

The easiest way to remove your old door handle is to remove it from the door itself. This is usually done with a screw driver. Some door handles have a cover plate which hides the screws used to mount them. You will need to remove the cover plate to gain access to the screws. Once you've removed your old handle, make note of the way the spindle is attached to ensure you are able to align it when you fit the new one.

You can also remove the door handle by unscrewing the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver to remove the door handle. But, you'll need to locate the small latch, which is located on the edge cut piece. After you have removed the latch, take off the handle and strike plate. Then, remove the latch from the door's edge.

Take off the Strike Plate

You'll have to replace your latch plate after replacing the handle. This is the plate that is the one that holds the hole in which the latch of the door hooks when the door closes. The packaging that the new handles are packaged in will have two different latch plates - either a rectangular or a circular one (see the diagram above detailing the parts of the door handle). If your current latch plate is a rectangular shape, switch it to a round one so that the latch is able to hook into the strike plate in a way that makes the handle more comfortable to use.

The first step is to remove the screw that's holding the old latch plate in place. The screws can be very tight, and may require some force to loosen. It may be helpful to have a second person assist in this area if it is possible.

After the screws are removed, the latch plate will slide out of the door with ease. If it is stuck or doesn't move using a nail file to scratch around the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate.

Now you can move on to preparing the new door strike plate for installation. With the wood screws that were included with your new handles, attach the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Do not overtighten your screws as this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, shut and then open the door to check if it latches and closes correctly. If not, you'll need to adjust the strike plate either up or down, or even forward or back, until the door closes and latches properly.
