In many pool games the penalty for a foul is ball-in-hand anywhere on the table for the opponent. In UK eight-ball this would normally give the opponent the option of one of two plays: (1) ball-in-hand with two shots; (2) being allowed to contact, or even pot, a ball other than one from their set from the snookered position (although the black may not be potted), with the loss of the first shot. American-style eight-ball rules are played around the world by professionals and in many amateur leagues. Diamonds. There are three diamonds or marks evenly spaced between each pocket on rails. There is another reason why golf is a greater test of nerve than billiards, and that is the variety of weapons that you must have for different strokes. If you dislike long losing hazards, you must and can try and play the cannon and potting game at the top of the table; if you hate those strokes, because you cannot do them, play an open game and go in for losing hazards from baulk. In one-pocket, in which a set number of balls must be made in a specific pocket, upon a foul the player must return a ball to the table.

Can you really put spin on the small hockey puck visible on the bottom right corner of this pic, the Novuss version of a cue ball? There are many examples of how this can be achieved. They all congregated there. However, there are several factors to consider, the most important of which are what the table is intended for and how often you’ll use it. The best part in playing this game is that, there is more to it than just shooting balls into pockets. In some games, three successive fouls in a row is a loss of game. In straight pool, a third successive foul results in a loss of 16 points (15 plus one for the foul). In addition, some variations of the game allow the player to pot one of the opposition's balls, on the first visit only, without the loss of a "free shot". • The player shoots in such a manner that his cue tip stays in contact with the cue ball for more than the momentary time commensurate with a stroked shot (a push shot).

Also free shot. A situation where a player has fouled, leaving the opponent snookered. If the first player hits in a solid ball, their objective from then on will be to hit in all of the other solid balls, and vice versa. A player can only lose by scratching on the 8 Ball if they hit the cue ball in on the same turn. On a coin operated table, the size of the cue ball is normally bigger than the other balls due to its mechanism. Sometimes interchangeable with scratch, though the latter is often used only to refer to the foul of pocketing the cue ball. You should not pocket any other ball aside from the one you selected. In carom billiards games, when all the balls are kept near each other and a cushion so that with very soft shots the balls can be "nursed" down a rail, allowing multiple successful shots that effectively replicate the same ball setup so that the nurse shots can be continued almost indefinitely, unless a limit is imposed by the rules.

If you’re fairly new to the world of pool, or simply haven’t paid much attention to the tables you’ve played on, it can be hard to tell what material a pool table’s surface is. A version of the game, played on a pocket billiards table known as artistic pool began in the 1970s, with official competitions starting in 1993. These events are run and organised by the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA). Some wafter lock cylinders (especially certain Chicago-brand locks) are double bitted, with some wafers making contact with the key at the top of the keyway and others at the bottom.
