Shortly after the Olympics, Dino Duva was invited to Beijing to consult for the Chinese Boxing Federation. In Zhang, he saw not just talent but unprecedented ambition. At the time, Chinese boxers didn’t turn pro. Few of the country’s athletes did. "When you’re a national athlete in China, you get treated very well," says Duva. "You’re supported by the government. They support your family. They give you bonuses and pay you well. But if you decide to make the move to become professional, they cut you off." Zhang, Duva says, wanted more.

Zhang was highly regarded by American promoters by 2009 but his career stalled between 2009 and 2019 owing to a combination of his duties to Chinese national boxing obligations, mismanagement and accompanying legal issues, and his visa problems. Until Zhang signed with Matchroom Sport USA in 2020 at 37 years of age, he was excluded from boxing's top ranks.

Other heavyweights aren’t the only ones finally taking notice of Zhang. For the first time in his career, local officials have organized a delegation of hundreds of people to fly from China to Riyadh to support Zhang in person. As he walked into the gym, a wine distributor who operates on the compound gifted him two bottles of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, a Bordeaux wine which often sells for hundreds of dollars per bottle.

In 2019, the Lanes re-entereded the picture, this time as advisers. Roc Nation announced it was exiting boxing. The Lanes negotiated Zhang’s release with Matchroom Boxing, which Duva had cut a deal with, becoming his lead promoter. For all the work George and his team of nutritionists did, maintaining a regimen during the pandemic was not easy. In March ’21, Zhang faced Forrest. He knocked Forrest down three times in the first three rounds. In the second half of the fight, he ran out of gas, ultimately settling for a draw. Zhang says in the week leading up to the fight he drank only one bottle of water. Afterward he was hospitalized for kidney failure, liver damage and anemia.

In 2014, Zhang starred in John Woo's romantic epic The Crossing, based on the true story of the Taiping steamer collision and follows six characters and their intertwining love stories in Taiwan and Shanghai during the 1930s. Zhang plays a poor illiterate woman waiting for her soldier lover in 1930's Shanghai.

It’s just not popular. Not yet anyway. China has 1.4 billion people, but, says promoter Bob Arum, "that doesn’t mean anything. India has number of people, and you couldn’t sell a ticket to Mahatma Gandhi fighting for the title." In 2013, Arum signed Zou Shiming, Zhang’s Olympic teammate. The relationship was successful, with Zou even winning a 112-pound title. But he failed to capture national interest. "The problem was the guy couldn’t f—ing fight," says Arum. "He won two gold medals, I don’t know how, but he couldn’t fight." Zhang, Arum says, is different. "Heavyweights are the baddest guys in the world," says Arum. "And I think his ability is much greater than Zou’s was."

In the 11th round, Ball blasted Vargas back to the canvas with a right hand, but one judge scored it 114-112 to Vargas, with the second official scoring it 116-110 to Ball, while the third judge scored it a 113-113 draw.

For the most part, Wilder looked sluggish and didn’t land much of anything as he attempted to score his patented power punches. This allowed Zhang to take control early on and set Wilder up for a finish in the fifth. Zhang connected on a big right hand during an exchange inside that badly hurt "Bronze Bomber." Wilder was stunned and oddly turned around and started to walk away from the action. Zhang quickly chased him down and scored a final right hand that put a stop to the main event.

Zhang has shown immense talent and skill in his recent fights, leading many to speculate on potential future matchups. Fights against top contenders like Johnson and Garcia could cement his status as a rising star in the sport.
